I’m planning Thanksgiving for my family and am not sure whether I need to get placemats as well as a tablecloth.

It’s just a matter of preference. If you’re using a special or heirloom cloth, it might be a good idea… but again, that’s up to you.
Frankly, when I use tablecloths to dress my table for a special occasion I don’t use mats. I *do* however, use “chargers” under my dinner plates for more formal occasions. You might want to consider that, if you want to add a festive touch without the mats.
Here’s a site that illustrates “chargers”… (I *love* this site.. tons of great tips for setting that “special occasion” table!):

Here’s another link (part of the “wisegeek” site) that tackles the entire subject of placemats:

Best of luck, have FUN and Happy Thanksgiving!
If there are a lot of kids coming I would say to not bother, however it does make the table look nicer and gives the guests more distinct places to sit (at each place-mat)
yes you do. the one compliments the other.
They can compliment each other. Plus if there are messy eaters they can help contain the mess.
No they are not necessary at all.The napkins can give it a festive look if that’s what you want….
My personal opinion:
If bare table or lace or linen covering, use placemats.
If a vinyl table cloth, no placemats.
No!!! You never use both at the same time.
yes try these
