Best of luck with this very hard situation. You’ll probably have to put in a couple of intense days emailing and phoning, but there are organizations that have resources to help people in situations like yours.

I think you should contact your local Humane Society and ask for their help. There is medical insurance for pets but with a pre-existing condition your baby might not be insurable. I’m praying for you. Good Luck!

There is dog insurance but it’s usually expensive. You can go to this website: www.helpmyhound.com it’s great and may help you find a possible cause and suggest a treatment.
Also, www.earthclinic.com has a pet section that might help.
    Good luck.

You should be asking the Vet these questions, not us. Ask the vet for prognosis without further testing, and it is too late for insurance. Only you and your vet can decide how much is too much to pay for treatment, or what treatment should be done. No home remedy or vitamin could be recommended by people with so little info to go one. Talk to the vet and get clear answers from them on how to proceed.

The responsible thing to do is have your Chihuahua treated by a Vet. There is no hollistic treatment, vitamin, or supplement that can replace Vet care. And pet insurance companies are not going to cover your Chihuahua while he is sick. I know Vet care can run into the thousands of dollars but like you said, he is a part of your family. Get him the treatment he needs. Put the bill on your credit card if you have to.

Chances are the mass is causing the excessive thirst and diarrhea. It can be hard financially to help them and you can check for breed specific assistance. I know of people that have put it on credit cards to help their pet and then pay the debt off, sometimes you just have to do what you can.
If you are in the city, try finding a vet in a country setting. They tend to be much cheaper and it may be something you could afford then.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. In January this year my 8 year old cattle dog started drinking buckets of water, getting diarrhea, went off his food etc, we took him to our vets and they also run tests. I am sorry to say that he died two weeks later of liver cancer. It happened very quickly. If your dog is not desexed there is a big possibility that he may also have some sort of cancer around this region, as his symptoms sound very similar to my dog (his liver cancer came from his testicular cancer). Unfortunately, there is not alot you can do to cure this – which will not cost you an arm and a leg, There is chemo, which is very costly and dangerous to you and other pets, due to the radioactive material in his stools and vomit. My heart goes out to you, my dog was my child too, as I don’t have children, and I know how you feel. There is a good website listed below where you can investigate this further. Good luck – I hope you get a happy ending.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but a mass is usually a euphemism for cancer. Talk to your vet about this, as this is what the tests they are proposing will find out.

As far as insurance goes, once medical problems have already been discovered, they are usually excluded from benefits.

You need to start thinking in practical terms about how you are going to handle the final days of your pet, not IF he dies, but WHEN he dies, whether this happens in a few weeks or in many years. Death is a natural thing, and sadly dogs have a much shorter life expectancy than humans.

It’s all about the quality of his life, and what you can give him, now that he has given you all this pleasure and comfort in yours.

Go to a vet that takes Care Credit they have plans with little or no intrest and low payments.

This doesn’t sound like something I would wait around on. If it were me personally, I would ask the vet about payment options as a last resort. Most reputable vets have payment plans.

Only the vet can tell you what it is. My brothers dog developed a tumor in the lining of his stomach and they couldn’t find the reason why he was losing weight and vomiting. They did exploratory surgery to check for digestive blockage and nothing. They finally, after 2 months tests, the dog losing 18 lbs and him suffering, the vet determined it was inoperable cancer. Don’t wait on this!

If your dog has already been diagnosed with a mass this is not something that insurance would cover. You can check with your local animal shelters about any low cost clinics but you may be out of luck.

Sorry to say this but fact is if there’s a mass around his liver it’s most likely cancerous – and there’s nothing you can do to stop the inevitable. The vet probably wants to do a biopsy which would let him look at some of the cells in the mass. That alone could cost you several hundred dollars and may just result in the vet telling you that it’s cancerous.

If it isn’t cancerous, then there’s the possibility that it could be removed. But the fact that it’s AROUND his liver sounds like a very involved, very expensive and probably very risky procedure for your dog. You might pay $800 to $1,000 for surgery only for your dog to either die during surgery or shortly afterwards.

It’s about quality life and about chance of survival. Don’t put your old dog through test upon test, treatment upon treatment if it only means a few more months with you. I did this once with a dog with bone cancer and if I had it to do again I would have let him go much sooner. I spent about $3,000 on biopsies, a CT scan, medicine, etc, etc, only to lose him two months after the initial diagnosis.

Loving your pet isn’t going bankrupt to save it when there’s no hope – it’s knowing when to let go.

(wow – who gave “neoplop” a thumbs down? What you said was both perfect and beautiful – BIG thumbs up!)
